Accurate Meter & Supply Adds a New England Waterworks Specialist
Accurate Meter & Supply has acquired The Stiles Company, a Norwood, Massachusetts-based distributor and service provider focused on water meters and waterworks products for municipal utilities across New England. The deal gives the Katy, Texas-based distributor a stronger position in a regional market where technical support, installed product knowledge, and municipal relationships matter as much as inventory depth.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
According to the company release, Stiles was founded in 1983 and has built its business around supplying mechanical and electronic water meters, along with related waterworks products such as clamps, valves, fittings, and couplings. The company also provides large meter field testing and technical support, making it more than a product seller in a market where utilities often value service capability alongside supply reliability.
Accurate Meter & Supply, founded in 1988, distributes water, sewer, and drainage products for municipal, residential, and commercial infrastructure customers. Its broader offering includes meter systems, pipe, valves and fittings, hydrants, fire protection equipment, meter boxes, manholes, and backflow devices, plus services including leak detection, flow testing, precast vaults, and backflow prevention.
What Stays the Same After the Acquisition
One of the most important details for customers and suppliers is continuity. Ian and Katie Kasowitz, who bought Stiles from the founding family in 2020, will continue to operate the business alongside the existing team. In distribution M&A, that kind of leadership retention often signals that the buyer wants to preserve local relationships and market knowledge rather than quickly fold the business into a centralized model.
Accurate emphasized both continuity and expansion in its public comments. “Together, we’re expanding our reach while continuing to deliver the products, technical expertise, and service our customers expect,” Accurate Meter & Supply President Caleb Burson said in a statement.
That message matters in municipal distribution. Water authorities and public utilities typically buy against long planning cycles, approved specifications, and trusted vendor relationships. A change in ownership can create uncertainty unless the acquiring distributor shows that account coverage, service standards, and technical support will remain intact.
The Kasowitzes also framed the transaction as a growth move rather than an exit from the market. “With Accurate’s support and partnership, we are well-positioned to expand our product and service offerings, invest in additional sales resources to drive new business wins,” they said in a announcement.
Why This Deal Matters in Distribution M&A
For distributors, the significance of this acquisition goes beyond simple geography. It reflects a familiar pattern in industrial and infrastructure distribution: buyers are seeking specialized regional companies with strong technical reputations, defensible customer relationships, and service revenue tied to essential end markets.
Several themes stand out:
- Regional expansion with local credibility: Accurate gains access to New England through an established operator instead of building greenfield from scratch.
- Product and service adjacency: Both companies operate in water-focused infrastructure categories, making the combination commercially logical.
- Municipal market resilience: Waterworks distribution tends to be supported by ongoing maintenance, replacement cycles, and infrastructure needs.
- Technical selling strength: Stiles brings consultative capabilities that are difficult to replicate quickly through scale alone.
For the broader wholesale distribution sector, this is the type of acquisition that can strengthen both purchasing leverage and customer value. A larger platform may be able to support wider inventory access, more field resources, and better service coverage, while the acquired business preserves the specialized knowledge that won municipal accounts in the first place.
In supply chain terms, the deal also shows how distributors are positioning themselves closer to critical infrastructure spend. Water, sewer, and drainage products are not commodity channels in the purest sense; they often require application support, compliance familiarity, and fast response when utilities face repairs or replacement work. Scale helps, but relevant expertise is what protects margins and customer loyalty.
The Bigger Picture for Waterworks Distributors
This acquisition suggests continued interest in building broader waterworks platforms through targeted M&A. Accurate is not entering an unrelated category; it is extending a business model already centered on municipal and infrastructure distribution. That usually creates a clearer integration path than deals built only around size.
For independent distributors, the takeaway is practical. Niche market position, service depth, and customer trust remain valuable assets in today’s M&A market, especially in infrastructure-oriented verticals. For larger distributors, the lesson is equally clear: expansion works best when it adds technical competence and regional relationships, not just revenue.
As end markets continue to demand reliability, support, and faster response across the supply chain, acquisitions like this one show where value is being created in distribution: at the intersection of local expertise, essential infrastructure, and scalable service capability.
